Airbus finds an A321neo fuselage defect affecting around 500 jets
Airbus disclosed a quality defect on the A321neo, insufficient anti corrosion primer on fuselage stringers built by a Leonardo subcontractor, affecting roughly five hundred aircraft delivered or in production.
Airbus said on 24 September 2026 that a subcontractor to its Italian aerostructures supplier Leonardo applied insufficient anti corrosion primer to stringers, the long aluminium stiffeners that reinforce the fuselage skin, on a batch of A321neo aircraft. Roughly 500 aircraft are affected, about 250 already delivered and due for rework at scheduled maintenance, and about 250 still in production, to be corrected before delivery.
Airbus called it a quality issue, not a safety issue, said affected aircraft can keep flying, and said the source is identified and contained, with a remedy available. No EASA or FAA Airworthiness Directive had been issued as of 25 September 2026. Group guidance for 2026 deliveries, around 870 commercial aircraft, was reaffirmed despite the defect.
On the line
Operators with A321neo aircraft delivered in 2026, or due for delivery this year, should expect Airbus or their MRO to flag affected manufacturer serial numbers for a forward fuselage stringer primer rework at the next scheduled heavy check rather than as an unscheduled visit.
