FAA proposes replacing A320 family evacuation slides after inflation failures
Slides on A318, A319, A320 and A321 aircraft failed to inflate in emergency evacuations because a connector on the inflation hose assembly fractured and separated. The FAA wants affected slides replaced.

The FAA published a proposed Airworthiness Directive on 15 October 2026 covering Airbus A318, A319, A320 and A321 series aeroplanes, prompted by reports of door evacuation slide systems failing to inflate during emergency evacuations.
The cause named in the proposal is specific: the connector on the inflation hose assembly fractured and separated. The proposal would require replacing affected slides with serviceable units, and would prohibit installing a non compliant component in their place.
Comments close on 30 November 2026. Until the rule is final, nothing is mandatory, but a proposal of this kind is the clearest possible signal of what is coming.
In plain terms
An escape slide is a certified assembly, not a bag of fabric. It inflates from a charged cylinder through a hose, and the connector on that hose is what the proposal says broke. A slide that does not inflate is a slide that does not exist during the ninety seconds an evacuation is supposed to take.
On the line
Check effectivity by part number on the slide assembly rather than by aircraft registration, because the affected population is defined by the component. If your organisation holds spare slides or has slides out at an overhaul vendor, the prohibition on installing non compliant units is the part that bites first: a serviceable tag is not sufficient if the part number is in scope. Worth opening the conversation with your slide vendor now rather than after the final rule.
