Icelandair mechanics strike, then stand down, in one day

Icelandair mechanics walked out at midnight over a stalled pay dispute, cancelling thirty one flights and disrupting about fifty five hundred passengers, then called off the strike hours later the same day.

Icelandair's aircraft mechanics walked off the job at 00:01 local time on 23 September 2026, after wage talks and a period of state mediation failed to produce an agreement. The union, FVFI, had voted for strike action by 88.3 percent on a 92 percent turnout.

The airline cancelled 26 international flight legs and five domestic services before the strike ended, disrupting roughly 5,500 passengers. Icelandair confirmed the cancellations in a statement to the Nasdaq company news service.

The mechanics called off the strike later the same day, after further talks. What changed to end the stoppage was not immediately published.

In plain terms

State mediation is a formal process, common in Nordic labour disputes, where a government appointed mediator works with both sides to try to find a deal before a strike begins or continues. It cannot impose a settlement, only broker one.

Icelandair is a small carrier, but its mechanics work is concentrated at Keflavík, its only maintenance base, so a stoppage there has an outsized effect on the airline's transatlantic connecting schedule, which routes European and North American traffic through Iceland. A prolonged strike would have forced much wider cancellations across that network, which is why the one day dispute drew national attention.
