Trent 1000
Trent 1000, Trent 1000 TEN, Trent 1000 XE

At a glance
- Rolls-Royce has achieved a 100 percent improvement in time on wing across the Trent fleet since its durability programme began. Engines now stay on wing twice as long between shop visits.
- Phase one of the Trent 1000 durability enhancement package received regulatory approval in June and more than doubles time on wing on its own.
- Phase two adds roughly another 30 percent, and has been rolling into in service engines from April as they arrive for refurbishment.
- Combined, the phases should deliver up to triple the original time on wing.

Program and production
The Trent 1000 was the worst problem Rolls-Royce has had in modern times, and it is now the company's clearest recovery story. Both halves of that sentence matter.
Early Trent 1000 variants suffered durability failures in the intermediate pressure turbine and compressor that grounded 787s worldwide and cost Rolls-Royce billions in customer compensation and remediation. The engine's reputation was damaged badly enough that it shifted engine selection on new 787 orders toward the GE GEnx for years.
The turnaround has been methodical. Rolls-Royce built a durability enhancement package and is delivering it in phases. Phase one received regulatory approval in June and more than doubles time on wing by itself, through a reduced weight high pressure turbine blade shroud and new advanced coatings on the blades and nozzle guide vanes. Phase two improves on that by roughly another 30 percent, and has been rolling into in service engines from April as powerplants come in for scheduled refurbishment.
Taken together the phases should offer up to triple the original time on wing. Across the whole Trent family, Rolls-Royce reports a 100 percent improvement since the programme started, and in February 2026 it lifted its own durability improvement target, which is not something a company does unless the data is running ahead of plan.
Progress has been faster than expected partly because the upgrades were proven on the Trent 7000 first, where experience is showing up to triple the time on wing for some high pressure turbine blades.
Technical and maintenance
In plain terms
Time on wing is how long an engine stays installed before it has to come off for a shop visit. It is the single number that decides engine operating economics, because a shop visit is expensive, slow and takes a spare engine to cover. Doubling it roughly halves how often an operator pays that bill.
On the line
The upgrades reach in service engines at scheduled refurbishment rather than through a mandated campaign, so the fleet will carry a mix of standards for some time. Track time on wing separately by build standard instead of averaging across the fleet, or the improvement will be invisible in your own data. When an engine is inducted, confirm which phase of the enhancement package it will come out with, because that changes the interval you plan the next removal against.
The Trent 1000 XE is the latest standard, marketed on the strength of the durability work rather than on fuel burn.
Applications and fleet
The Trent 1000 is one of two engine options on the 787, competing with the GE GEnx-1B. The GEnx took the larger share during the Trent 1000's troubles, and the durability recovery is Rolls-Royce's argument for winning that share back.
The competitive stake is visible elsewhere on this site. Malaysia Airlines is reported to be close to an order for 787-10s with GE engines, moving away from the Rolls-Royce widebodies it leases today, which is the kind of decision the durability programme exists to prevent.
Safety
No significant developments since 11 October 2026.
The durability work is a reliability and cost matter rather than an active safety issue. No Airworthiness Directive of fleet wide significance was issued against the family in this period.
